Revenue Model vs Business Model: A Common Mix-Up

Revenue Model vs Business Model: A Common Mix-Up

A freelance designer decided to move into products. She built a set of Figma templates and listed them at 29 each. Sales came in. She called it her business model.

Six months later, she had made 1,740 in total and spent roughly 60 hours on customer support, refunds, and updates. The hourly return was around 4.80.

Pricing is not structure

A revenue model answers one question: how does money come in? A business model answers a different set: who are you serving, what problem does it solve, how is it delivered, what does it cost to operate, and is there a reason customers return?

Skipping those questions and going straight to pricing is common. It is also why many early products generate activity without generating a viable operation.

The 5 questions worth answering first

  1. Who specifically is the customer, described by a real behaviour, not a demographic label
  2. What does it cost to acquire one paying customer
  3. What is the realistic lifetime value of that customer
  4. What does it cost to deliver the product or service once sold
  5. What happens after the first purchase

The designer eventually repositioned her templates as part of a 149 annual membership with monthly additions. Refund requests dropped. Revenue stabilised at around 890 per month with no increase in hours worked.

The product did not change. The structure around it did.
